The ongoing monsoon rains across Pakistan are expected to continue for the next two days, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. With more wet weather on the horizon, authorities have issued warnings for possible urban and riverine flooding in multiple regions.
Deputy Director of the Meteorological Department, Irfan Virk, told Samaa TV that July has seen 25% more rainfall than the monthly average nationwide, though Sindh has experienced below-normal precipitation.
Looking ahead, he cautioned that August is also likely to bring above-average rainfall, which could increase the risk of flooding in major cities and along key rivers.
Flood alerts in Punjab
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued flood warnings for various rivers in Punjab, including the Chenab and Jhelum, where moderate flooding is predicted between July 30 and 31.
A PDMA spokesperson said that water levels are expected to rise in rivers connected to the Ravi, while a significant increase in flow is forecast for the Sutlej River at Ganda Singh within the next 24 hours.
Urban flooding concerns
The PDMA has also alerted residents of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Lahore about a heightened risk of urban flooding over the next 48 hours due to heavy rainfall. Commissioners of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal divisions have been placed on high alert.
The Punjab relief commissioner has directed all relevant departments to remain prepared for any emergencies caused by the anticipated heavy rain and rising river levels.
