Nearly three months after the May conflict, Indian Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh claimed on Saturday that India shot down five Pakistani fighters and one large aircraft.
The claim by the Indian Air Chief Marshal was quickly rebutted by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, who labeled the claim ‘implausible’ and ‘ill-timed’.
The minister reiterated that not a single Pakistani aircraft was hit or destroyed by India, while Pakistan destroyed six Indian jets, S-400 air defense batteries, and unmanned aircraft of India, while swiftly putting several Indian airbases out of action.
“If the truth is in question, let both sides open their aircraft inventories to independent verification—though we suspect this would lay bare the reality India seeks to obscure,” the minister said.
The defense minister’s rebuttal aside, it is important to note that not a single global outlet reported any loss of a Pakistani aircraft during the May conflict.
In fact, while India denied that any of its Rafales were taken down by the Pakistani Air Force, multiple global outlets, including CNN, confirmed that Pakistan’s claims were correct and that its Air Force did indeed shoot down Rafales.
However, later, India’s Chief of Defense Staff, General Anil Chauhan, admittedthat the Indian Air Force had suffered losses at the hands of Pakistan.
Although India has nothing to back up its claim of shooting down Pakistani jets, even U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that multiple Indian jets were shot down by Pakistan.
The belated statement by Singh, issued a full three months after the conflict, suggests that pressure is mounting on India, which was completely outmaneuvered by Pakistan during the May conflict. The embarrassment India faced has been further compounded by recent statements from the U.S. President, who has repeatedly criticized India and even imposed a 50 percent tariff as “punishment” for buying Russian oil.
Bottom line: While the Rafale kills by the Pakistani Air Force are now well documented and confirmed by multiple neutral experts, there has not been a single credible report of Pakistan losing any of its fighter jets to date.
