A US-Pakistani woman wearing a headscarf was violently assaulted in Houston, Texas, in what is being investigated as a possible hate crime. The incident took place near Sugar Park Plaza on South Wilcrest Drive.
The victim was reportedly shoved from behind by an unidentified individual, causing her to fall face-first onto the pavement. As a result, she suffered a broken nose and significant facial injuries. Surveillance footage from the area captured the suspect fleeing the scene.
“When she video called me on WhatsApp, her whole face was bloody,” Muhammad Zaheer, the woman’s son, told reporters. “Anybody would get mad that something like that would happen. We just need to catch that guy as soon as possible.”
“She says it hurts really bad. She needed painkillers and I think this is going to be, like, a trauma for her. She’s not going to forget this,” he added.
The woman’s son stated that his mother was targeted because she was wearing a headscarf, suggesting the attacker may have assumed she was Muslim. He called for swift justice, urging authorities to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrator.
The family has filed a complaint with local law enforcement, who have confirmed that the suspect, if caught, will face serious charges.
