Islamabad-Jakarta to Restore Sister City Agreement

In a move to reinforce the historic friendship between Pakistan and Indonesia, Islamabad and Jakarta plan to honor each other by naming roads and installing monuments in their respective capitals.

The initiative is part of efforts to revive a sister city agreement signed between the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Jakarta in 1984. According to official sources, the federal government has instructed the CDA to implement the agreement in full and submit proposals outlining symbolic and cultural exchanges. These proposals include naming roads after notable figures from each other’s countries and establishing commemorative monuments.

A senior official familiar with the plan said the government aims to undertake a series of coordinated activities with Jakarta’s administration, highlighting friendship through visible and lasting gestures. The CDA has been tasked with drafting and sharing detailed plans accordingly.

Islamabad already features several roads named in honor of international leaders, such as Faisal Avenue (after the late King Faisal of Saudi Arabia), Atatürk Avenue (after Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk), and roads named for Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, and Japanese dignitaries. Recent examples include Iran Avenue, inaugurated in 2024 by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, and an interchange named after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this year.

The capital also commemorates friendly nations through its parks, such as Argentina Park, Ankara Park, and Japanese Park, and the iconic Faisal Mosque, a gift from King Faisal of Saudi Arabia. Designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay, the mosque was completed in 1988 and remains one of Pakistan’s most prominent symbols of Islamic solidarity.

Confirming the development, a CDA official said, “We are finalising proposals under the 1984 MoU with Jakarta, as directed by the federal government, and will submit them soon.”
