UAE Cracks Down on Illegal E-Scooter Use

To enhance road safety, Ajman Police have announced a complete ban on the use of electric scooters of all kinds on public roads within the emirate.

The decision follows last month’s advisory, in which authorities reminded riders of e-scooters and two-wheelers to strictly follow traffic rules. The statement also cautioned against using unauthorised or modified electric bicycles and scooters.

Alongside the advisory, police shared a video highlighting common violations by riders. These included not wearing protective gear, riding against traffic on one-way streets, entering roads from the wrong direction, and misusing pedestrian crossings.

Across the UAE, law enforcement bodies frequently release such warnings to curb unsafe practices and ensure the wellbeing of all road users. In Abu Dhabi, police recently circulated a video showing three individuals on e-scooters riding in unsafe areas, sparking public debate on the need for tighter enforcement and stricter regulations. Authorities stressed that e-scooters should only be used in designated safe zones.

Residents have also expressed growing concerns. Um Saeed, a long-time resident of Dubai’s Jumeirah area, recalled a near-miss incident while walking to a grocery store. “An e-scooter suddenly came out from between two parked cars. I barely managed to move aside in time,” she said.

Dubai has taken additional steps by forming a dedicated unit in collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police. This team focuses on monitoring violations committed by cyclists and e-scooter users, aiming to further strengthen road safety across the city.
