The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert warning of heavy rainfall in Karachi and Hyderabad between August 24 and 28. The forecast raises concerns of urban flooding, power outages, and disruptions to essential services.
According to the NDMA, Hyderabad is expected to experience heavy downpours with thunder and lightning, which could increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. Karachi, meanwhile, is likely to receive heavy rain beginning Thursday night.
Authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures during the spell. Citizens are advised to avoid flooded roads, stay away from electric poles, handle electrical appliances with care, and ensure drainage systems are clear to reduce waterlogging.
The NDMA also encouraged families in vulnerable neighborhoods to prepare emergency kits containing water, food, flashlights, and first aid supplies.
Separately, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported on Friday that the rain system that drenched Karachi over the past three days was expected to weaken by today, with only light showers in the morning.
However, a fresh monsoon system is projected to enter Sindh on August 27. “The new weather system is likely to bring rain to Karachi and other parts of the province through August 30,” a Met Office spokesperson said.
