The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has rejected reports alleging that telecom operator Jazz overcharged its customers by more than Rs. 6.58 billion during the financial year 2023-24.
Sources told ProPakistani that a detailed report has been submitted to the Prime Minister, clarifying that no such overbilling occurred. PTA maintained that all tariff adjustments were made in accordance with the approved regulatory framework.
The regulator stated that social media claims suggesting massive overcharging were baseless and part of a negative propaganda campaign aimed at undermining PTA’s regulatory role.
“There has been no violation of the approved tariff structure, and all adjustments were duly approved by the authority,” the report said, the sources added.
PTA further emphasized that the audit observations regarding tariff adjustments had already been approved under the regulatory framework, and the supporting records were shared with audit authorities for verification. The regulator stressed that its decisions were transparent and fully documented.
However, the controversy gained momentum after an audit report claimed that Jazz had charged customers Rs. 6.58 billion above the approved tariff during 2023-24. The report also noted that the company was permitted to increase its tariff by 15 percent on a quarterly basis, but the excess collection allegedly exceeded that margin.
The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, has taken notice of the allegations and summoned the PTA chairman for a briefing on August 25 at the Parliament House. The committee is expected to seek detailed clarification from PTA regarding its role in protecting consumer rights and ensuring fair tariff practices.

I purchased a Ufone mobile package 30 days for Rs.700/- from JazzCash mobile app, after 5 or 6 days there was a message that your package has been expired. so I cannot call to any network. It is very frustrating situation, I have not received any message that “it is going to expire so renew it” or like that, don’t know who is guilty… I can’t see any option to register the complain.

Ufone is regularly overcharging. I never used Mobile data but they charged almost on daily basis with the message that you have used 1 Mb for Rs.3.75 plus tax. When the Mobile data is closed how I can use Mobile data?

Mobilink is doing regular scam with its users on utilizing balance by ait subscribing to services. I’m closely monitoring my prepaid balance for quite a while and there are clear signs of balance deduction. I use call and data packages and keep balance to monitor through Simosa app, where no deduction shown due to call or data. I once complained and they did refund. But balance deduction continous. Many times I found unwanted subscriptions in app and I un subscribe them. Launch complain but there’s no response. Recently life beema daily subscription was activated on my number, when I was visiting a website not Mobilink, and when I closed a popup on website, behind that subscription activation msg received. I immediately go to Simosa app and Rs17 deducted, I again un subscribed that.
Mobilink already running online scam through online ads that appears on apps when we tap on close (X) we will recive message that your are successfully subscribe for so an so service and your sim card balance is deducted.
I complain to Mobilink customer services but they only tell that sir these are third-party services and we are unable to recover or stop this kind of “tap & subscribe” service, I also ask them how mobilink allow third-party service to deduct our balance that we have added to our sim card balance for calling on behalf of Monilink.
There have been several instances where i was subscribed to a jazz package even though i did not subscribe. Lodged several complaints. Was told it would be resolved but no resolution. On top of that helpline for my complain put me on hold for 30 minutes for which i was charged. Why? If the phone company is busy why should i pay the price? Helpline should be free. Its highway robbery n regulators are busy deepening thier pockets! Is mulk ka kuch nai honay waala!! Corruption everywhere!
All mobile phone service providers in Pakistan are ‘looting’ the public like anything. PTA has certainly failed in its oversight responsibility because it is not just the pricing but also the quality that matters. Many internet proving vendors are providing poor services and yet despite complaints to the PTA, it has done nothing. The problem is that consumer has no value in this country.

Overcharging is a rabbit now by businesses in Pakistan. It has become a new normal for service or product buyers. Those who are supposed to control pricing are sleeping because they are not affected. When you compare Pakistan with UAE and Oman for example, there even food giant like Nestle cannot increase prices with the government approval which is a tedious and long process including providing evidence of cost control steps taken by the company to avoid price increase. Government rarely approves price increases.
