The Trump administration has decided to impose new restrictions on the duration of certain U.S. visas, including those issued to foreign students and journalists, according to international media reports.
Since 1978, holders of F-visas — mainly foreign students — were allowed to stay in the United States for an indefinite period as long as they maintained their enrollment. However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) argues that this open-ended stay has created loopholes and disadvantages for American citizens.
Under the proposed rule, international students would only be allowed to remain in the U.S. for the length of their academic program, with a maximum cap of four years. Similarly, foreign journalists would be granted an initial stay of up to 240 days.
The DHS further stated that both categories — students and media personnel — would be subject to regular checks and monitoring to ensure compliance with visa conditions.
