A tragic accident in Multan’s Jalalpur Pirwala area saw a Rescue-1122 boat overturn in the Chenab River on Saturday amid flood evacuation efforts, resulting in the deaths of five individuals.
Local officials, including the Deputy Commissioner and City Police Officer, quickly reached the scene to oversee the operations and assess the situation.
They confirmed that darkness and swollen floodwaters played a role in the incident. The strong current caused the boat to collide with a submerged tree, tipping it over.
A high-ranking official in the provincial disaster agency underscored the importance of secure evacuation protocols, warning against overloading rescue and private boats in flood-affected areas.
Provincial authorities, including the Rescue-1122 secretary and the divisional emergency officer, paid their respects to the victims’ families. The Chief Minister also extended condolences.
Despite this calamity, Rescue-1122 has already evacuated over 9,000 people in the Multan region. Across Punjab, more than 350,000 individuals—and upward of 300,000 livestock—have been secured from flood zones during the ongoing relief operations.
