The Punjab government is considering lifting the ban on teachers’ transfers under the open merit system from September 22.
Transfers on open merit will be opened after a gap of two years, a move expected to benefit nearly 300,000 teachers across the province. Teachers posted in remote areas will be able to apply for transfers closer to their homes once the policy takes effect.
At the same time, questions are being raised about the government’s education priorities. Despite claims of tackling unemployment, more than 14,000 government schools have already been outsourced in two phases.
Now, according to reports, the Education Department is preparing to eliminate nearly 43,000 teaching posts, even though over 133,000 positions are already vacant in Punjab.
