A sudden surge of conjunctivitis cases has hit Rawalpindi and Islamabad, affecting a large number of children, women, and elderly residents, many of whom are turning to hospitals for treatment. The spike in infections has also driven up the demand for rose water across the Twin Cities.
In just the last three days, more than 2,100 patients with eye infections have been treated at the three main government hospitals — Holy Family Hospital, Benazir Bhutto General Hospital, and District Headquarters Hospital. Private hospitals and clinics are also reporting a sharp rise in cases.
Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Inayat confirmed that this is the second major outbreak of conjunctivitis in the twin cities during the past nine months.
He recommended preventive care, including washing eyes with clean water daily, allowing water to gently rinse the eyes, and wearing dark glasses to reduce irritation. Applying small ice cubes can also help relieve discomfort. However, he stressed that anyone experiencing severe pain should seek medical attention immediately.
