Karachi Paralyzed as Urban Flooding Causes Citywide Traffic Jams

Authorities in Karachi closed the Korangi Crossing River Bridge and the ABM Causeway after flooding from the Malir nullah created hazardous conditions. Officials said the decision aimed to ensure public safety as water levels rose across the city.

The closures triggered major traffic congestion, with long queues of vehicles reported at Qayyumabad Chowrangi, Jam Sadiq Bridge, the Expressway, and Brooks Chowrangi. Traffic police and eyewitnesses said thousands of commuters were left stranded for hours.

Impact of Heavy Rains

Karachi has faced continuous rainfall since Tuesday, with showers continuing into Thursday. Areas including Saddar, I.I. Chundrigar Road, and Shahrah-e-Faisal experienced heavy to moderate downpours.

Rising River Levels

Persistent rains raised water levels in both the Malir and Lyari rivers, submerging low-lying neighborhoods and further straining drainage systems. Intermittent showers also inundated main roads, adding to the disruption of daily life.
