Major Motorway Closed Due to Floods

Motorway M-5 near Jalalpur Peer Wala was shut down to all types of traffic, as announced by PDMA Punjab’s Director General, Irfan Ali Kathia.

Kathia explained that floodwater erosion has compromised the structural safety of the motorway, creating a risk of breach. As a result, the motorway has been completely closed while authorities take emergency action to prevent major damage.

Emergency response teams, including those from PDMA, the National Highway Authority (NHA), and other relevant departments, are placing sandbags and stones along vulnerable sections of the motorway to reinforce it.

Floodwaters Decreasing, Officials Say

The DG PDMA also reported that over the next 24 hours significant reductions in floodwater levels are expected in the Jalalpur Peer Wala area. Water flows in Punjab’s rivers are declining steadily—evidence that the worst may be past.

He noted that at the Panjnad location, the flow has dropped to 392,000 cubic feet per second, while at Guddu Barrage it remains 627,000 cusecs.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have warned motorists to avoid M-5 until further notice.
