The Punjab government has announced a three-shift schooling system to accommodate students affected by the recent floods, which have forced more than 3,000 schools across the province to shut down.
Provincial Minister for School Education, Rana Sikandar Hayat, shared the plan during a meeting with UNICEF’s Representative in Pakistan, Pernille Ironside. The session also reviewed the progress of ongoing education projects in the province.
The minister said that widespread flooding has badly disrupted education for thousands of children, with many school buildings either damaged or submerged. He admitted that Punjab was already facing a shortage of educational facilities, and the floods have further worsened the situation.
According to him, it could take up to three months to restore the damaged schools. Until then, the government will not only operate existing schools in three shifts but also arrange rented private buildings and set up temporary tent schools in flood-hit regions to ensure learning continues without interruption.
