The Punjab government has approved the preparation of a Water Supply and Sewerage Master Plan for 14 districts, to be completed within six months in collaboration with the Housing Department and Local Government Department.
Following the instructions of Housing Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal, a formal letter has been sent to the Project Director of Local Government, designating the Managing Directors of WASA agencies in the relevant districts as focal persons for the initiative.
According to the letter, a comprehensive review of the existing water supply systems, sewerage networks, and stormwater drains will be carried out in each district. The new master plan will be designed in line with current and future urban planning needs, incorporating measures to address climate impacts, introducing a modern planning framework, and preparing a phased financial strategy. Special emphasis will also be placed on enhancing the capacity of WASA agencies and strengthening their institutional framework.
The Housing Department noted that the newly established WASA bodies are gradually being strengthened, and inter-agency coordination is improving both in planning and execution of development projects.
The 14 districts where the master plan will be implemented include Dera Ghazi Khan, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, Sialkot, Hafizabad, Jhelum, Rahim Yar Khan, Jhang, Okara, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Murree, and Nankana Sahib.
