HMD to Bring Back Nokia’s Toughest Phone with a Modern Twist

HMD is preparing to release an updated version of the Nokia 800 Tough, nearly six years after the original model debuted in 2019. Reports from tipsters on X suggest that the new version will include modest upgrades while keeping the rugged design largely unchanged.

Design-wise, the leak suggests HMD isn’t making any major cosmetic changes. The new Nokia 800 Tough will likely feature the same chunky build, textured rear grip, and reinforced edges that helped it withstand drops and harsh conditions in the original version. However, one major improvement is the switch from the dated micro USB to a more modern USB-C port, a small but significant upgrade for faster and more convenient charging.

On the software side, HMD is reportedly updating the device from KaiOS 2.5.2 to KaiOS 3.1. The new version should offer smoother performance, improved app support (including better compatibility with WhatsApp and Google Maps), and enhanced system stability.

Beyond that, the rugged phone is expected to maintain its hallmark durability credentials, including IP68 water and dust resistance and MIL-STD-810 military-grade certification, making it a strong contender for outdoor users, field workers, and adventurers.

There’s no word yet on pricing or a release date, but given HMD’s recent push to rebrand and expand its lineup, the new Nokia 800 Tough could arrive in select markets soon. If the leak is accurate, it might mark the company’s continued commitment to keeping feature phones alive in a world dominated by smartphones.
