Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a pilot project using artificial intelligence to help reduce motorcycle accidents by at least 50 percent. The “AI for Safe Cities” initiative combines smart cameras, facial recognition, and telematics technology to monitor rider behavior and ensure road safety compliance.
According to Saeed Al Ramsi, Director at the RTA, the system gathers real-time data to detect violations such as speeding, harsh braking, dangerous turns, and driving against traffic. “The cameras will also ensure that delivery riders wear the correct uniforms and follow safety standards,” he explained.
The facial recognition feature identifies when riders are distracted, such as using their phones while driving. In addition, each motorcycle is equipped with a geofencing tracker to make sure riders stay within their assigned delivery zones. “Every delivery rider is allowed to operate within a specific area,” Al Ramsi said. “Some riders go beyond their designated routes, increasing risk. This system will prevent that and send reports to fleet managers for review and training.”
Currently, the technology is being tested on 12,000 motorcycles from various delivery companies. The RTA plans to expand it nationwide by the second quarter of 2026, covering an estimated 65,000 delivery bikes across the UAE.
Al Ramsi noted that in future phases, the system will be integrated with UAE Pass and Emirates ID databases to verify each rider’s identity and assigned vehicle. “This will stop unlicensed or unauthorized riders from using delivery bikes,” he said. “The goal is to make roads safer for both riders and the public.”
