The National Assembly Standing Committee on Government Assurances has directed the National Highways Authority (NHA) to strengthen monitoring of prices for commodities and services at service areas along Pakistan’s motorways.
The committee also called for better access to medical services and essential medicines at motorway service stops.
The meeting, chaired by MNA Nuzhat Sadiq at Parliament House, included several MNAs and officials from relevant ministries and departments. The discussion focused on the need for consistent price controls after a parliamentary question raised concerns about excessive charges on the motorways.
Committee members requested that the NHA provide full details of its contract with the concessionaire responsible for managing the M-2 Motorway, specifically the provisions related to price control. NHA officials explained that the two-year concession contract covers maintenance and services, and that while local district administrations regulate pricing, the NHA conducts regular inspections to ensure service standards are maintained.
The committee also discussed gas supply issues, directing Sui Gas companies to accelerate the provision of gas connections within five kilometers of gas fields and submit a progress report.
On the topic of substandard LPG cylinders, lawmakers urged OGRA to strengthen its oversight and regulatory measures to limit the sale and manufacture of unsafe domestic cylinders. The OGRA Chairman briefed the committee on ongoing inspections and public awareness campaigns to address safety risks from low-quality gas cylinders.
