Nanbai Association Announces Shutter-Down Strike in Major City

The Nanbai Association has declared a shutter-down strike across Rawalpindi on October 28, protesting against the rising prices of flour and what it describes as unjust actions by the district administration.

President of the Nanbai Association Rawalpindi, Shafiq Qureshi, said it has become impossible for tandoor owners to sell affordable bread when the cost of flour continues to surge.

He revealed that the price of an 80-kilogram flour bag has climbed to Rs. 10,500, with the rates of flour, fine flour, and refined flour nearly doubling over the past two months.

“If mill owners are selling flour at such inflated prices, how can we provide cheaper bread to the public?” Qureshi questioned, adding that the government has not offered any subsidy to bakers to ease their financial burden.

Qureshi also criticized the district administration for what he termed retaliatory measures, including arrests under the Maintenance of Public Order (3-MPO) law and the registration of cases against tandoor owners.

He alleged that police forces have been deployed at various tandoors, sealing multiple outlets and arresting over 25 Nanbais.

The association warned that all tandoors in Rawalpindi will remain closed on October 28, holding the administration responsible for failing to control the flour price hike that has burdened both bakers and consumers.
