The Karachi Traffic Police have issued more than 11,000 e-challans across the city within three days of the automated traffic monitoring system’s operation. Out of these, 1,755 challans were issued for overspeeding, officials said.
Many citizens voiced concern over what they described as unfair penalties, claiming that authorities have installed cameras and devices without placing speed limit signs or awareness boards.
Motorists said the lack of visible warnings has left them confused about the rules, adding that “if the challans continue at this rate, most of our income will go toward paying fines.”
Traffic DSP Kashif Nadeem said the e-monitoring system is functional at major locations, including Hasan Square, Civic Center, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Nursery, Baloch Colony, Drigh Road, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Clifton, Teen Talwar, and Defence Ittehad Street.
He explained that the digital system automatically tracks overspeeding and other violations.
A day earlier, an official car used by DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah also received an e-challan. The DIG confirmed that the fine was issued near Garden while the driver was behind the wheel, and that Rs. 10,000 was charged for not wearing a seatbelt.
