Young Cricketer Dies After Getting Hit by Ball During Practice Session

The global cricket community has been left in shock following the death of 17-year-old cricketer during a training session.

According to reports in foreign media, Ben Austin passed away after being struck on the neck by a ball in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. The young player was practicing in the nets at Ferntree Gully on Tuesday when a ball from a throwing machine hit him on the neck. Despite wearing a helmet, Austin wasn’t using a stem guard — a protective attachment that shields the vulnerable area between the helmet and the neck.

Emergency services rushed to the scene around 5:00 p.m. local time, and Austin was immediately taken to Monash Children’s Hospital in critical condition. He was placed on life support but sadly succumbed to his injuries two days later.

Cricket Victoria confirmed the heartbreaking incident. “Ben was wearing a helmet but did not have a stem guard,” a Cricket Victoria spokesperson said, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates during this unimaginably difficult time.”

Tributes have poured in from across Australia’s sporting community. Ben Austin’s death is particularly difficult for Australia, which has already endured a similar tragedy of a young cricketer passing — the 2014 loss of Phillip Hughes, who died after being struck in the neck during a domestic match in Sydney.

The incident has once again raised questions about helmet safety in cricket, especially the optional use of neck guards. Many are now calling for them to become mandatory rather than optional.

For cricket lovers everywhere, Austin’s death is a painful reminder of the sport’s rare but devastating risks — a game that brings joy to millions can also leave them shattered.
