The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) may soon introduce a major change to the computerized national identity card (CNIC) for Pakistanis at home and abroad. The move aims to make the CNIC more useful in emergencies.
A new resolution, unanimously passed by the Punjab Assembly, calls for adding the cardholder’s blood group to the CNIC. MPA Ahmad Iqbal Chaudhry presented the resolution, highlighting that this step could save lives by ensuring quick blood supply during accidents and emergencies.
The resolution notes that hospitals and blood banks often face difficulties when a patient’s blood group is unknown after serious accidents or disasters. By including blood group information on the CNIC, medical staff can provide the right blood type quickly, improving chances of survival.
NADRA currently issues computerized national identity cards to Pakistanis both in the country and overseas. If approved, this change will make the CNIC even more valuable for public safety and emergency response.
