European Country is Building a Monument in Karachi

Pakistan and Romania have decided to build a Friendship Monument in Karachi to mark 61 years of diplomatic relations and expand cooperation in culture, education, and business.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Romanian Ambassador Dr. Dan Stoenescu and Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi. According to an official statement, both sides explored ways to enhance collaboration between Karachi and Romanian cities, particularly in areas of local governance, cultural exchange, and trade development.

The Pakistan Romania Business Council (PRBC) will oversee the design, construction, and maintenance of the monument, envisioned as a lasting emblem of friendship between the two countries.

Ambassador Stoenescu thanked Commissioner Naqvi and his team for helping identify a suitable location for the project. He noted that the initiative reflects the shared goal of promoting stronger ties through cultural programs and people-to-people connections.

The ambassador also announced that Romania will soon reopen its Honorary Consulate in Karachi to represent Sindh province. The consulate will aim to strengthen bilateral trade, facilitate business relations, and promote community engagement.

Discussions also covered potential cooperation in urban governance, sustainable development, and public administration. Both sides expressed interest in expanding academic partnerships through student and faculty exchanges and joint educational programs.

In addition, the meeting emphasized boosting private sector collaboration and encouraging investment to further increase trade between Karachi, Sindh, and Romanian cities.

A proposal was also tabled to name a road in Karachi “Constanta Avenue” — after the Romanian port city — while a street in Constanta would be called “Karachi Avenue.”

The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to deepen ties through cultural initiatives, economic cooperation, and urban partnerships. The planned Friendship Monument will stand as a lasting tribute to the enduring friendship between Pakistan and Romania.
