New York City’s first-ever Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has officially invited the public to apply for roles in his upcoming administration. The young mayor is already making strides with one of the most open and transparent hiring efforts in the city’s history.
Following his historic victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, the 34-year-old Democratic Socialist is now calling on New Yorkers from all backgrounds to join his team. His transition committee has launched a public resume submission portal for anyone interested in positions at City Hall, including roles for deputy mayors, commissioners, and senior staff.
According to Mamdani’s transition team, applications are now being accepted for nearly all roles within the Mayor’s Office. The initiative emphasizes merit-based hiring, diversity, and inclusivity, with a goal to recruit qualified candidates from all five boroughs and beyond.
Interested applicants can submit their resumes through the official transition website. Each application should include a professional summary and a short statement explaining how the candidate’s experience aligns with Mamdani’s vision for an equitable and affordable New York City.
Positions will be reviewed and filled on a rolling basis, as the team works to finalize appointments ahead of Mamdani’s January 2026 inauguration.
Transition Executive Director Elana Leopold said in a statement,
To build a team of top talent, we’re searching far and wide. We’re asking New Yorkers to share their experience and join our mission to create a city that’s truly affordable for everyone.
Leopold added that the online portal will ensure an open and transparent recruitment process as the administration prepares for its official start in January.
“This platform helps us hit the ground running and turn campaign promises into policy,” she noted.

While Mamdani plans to retain Jessica Tisch as Police Commissioner, most senior roles are still unfilled. Sources say the mayor-elect aims to build a team that mirrors New York’s diversity and aligns with his progressive vision for governance.
Despite his youth and relatively limited executive experience, Mamdani’s hiring process is expected to be closely watched. His history of recognizing potential in unconventional candidates, such as Elle Bisgaard-Church, his current senior adviser, who first applied cold to his Assembly office, suggests that fresh voices will be welcomed.
