Rs. 2.5 Billion Development Projects Launched in Lahore

The government has launched major development works at key busy areas in Lahore to reduce pollution and ensure smoother traffic flow for the public.

An official from the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) told Dawn on Saturday that the city has long faced serious environmental issues, particularly winter smog. The Lahore High Court has also urged the government to take action through targeted interventions.

The redevelopment focuses on the city’s busiest zones, starting with areas around Data Darbar, Bhati Chowk, and Mohni Road. The Rs. 2.5 billion project includes remodeling Bhati Chowk, developing a sitting area in front of Data Darbar, improving pedestrian zones, widening roads, upgrading façades, landscaping, and restoring street lights and road signage.

About 5.5 kanal of private land and 16 kanal of state land previously occupied by the demolished bird market have been acquired to facilitate the work.

Officials said the project aims to provide smooth traffic flow for nearly 270,000 vehicles daily, ensure safe pedestrian movement, improve the area’s aesthetics, and reduce smog and carbon emissions. The LDA will fund the project, while its subsidiary, TEPA, will complete the work within eight months.

Other areas, including the railway station front, Misri Shah, Aik Moria Pul, Do Moria Pul, and Circular Road, are also set to be redeveloped following the same pattern. The debris from the demolished bird market near Data Darbar has already been cleared.

  • Arslan you are completely wrong. None of these projects are development oriented.

These are projects to give contracts to ministers so they can take public funds

Why aren’t projects launched in small areas and towns ? Bcz it would cost less.

Why education and health services are being ignored ? Bcz there is less money pocketed there.

All this does is increase debt on the province. These projects don’t last long and a new contract is given every few years.

China, Japan Europe all got out of excessive construction projects bcz they know its a waste of funds
