Apple is speeding up its preparations for a leadership transition as Chief Executive Tim Cook may step down as early as next year, according to a report from the Financial Times. The company’s board and senior leaders are now placing greater focus on ensuring a smooth handover after Cook’s more than 14 years leading the $4 trillion technology firm.
Inside the company, John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, is viewed as the frontrunner to take over. Although no final decision has been made, the succession process has been underway for several years. According to the report, the planning is not tied to Apple’s current performance, which remains strong heading into the year-end sales season.
Cook, who turned 65 this month, became CEO in 2011 after the death of co-founder Steve Jobs. Under his leadership, Apple’s market value has expanded from roughly $350 billion to $4 trillion. The company’s stock is trading near record highs following strong quarterly results.
According to the Financial Times, Apple is unlikely to reveal a new CEO before its late-January earnings report, which covers the critical holiday quarter. An early-year announcement would give the next leadership team time to settle in before major events such as the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June and the iPhone launch in September.
Slashdot contributor Brian Fagioli notes that Ternus is a deeply technical leader who played a central role in the development of Apple Silicon and the Mac’s hardware resurgence. Elevating him to CEO would signal that Apple’s board wants to reinforce strong, product-focused leadership and shift away from relying on accessories or high-cost experiments that do not resonate with customers.
Fagioli argues that the company needs a leader who can reconnect Apple with its history of creating essential devices, products that users rely on daily, rather than return or overlook.
Ternus is the same age Cook was when he took over from Steve Jobs in 2011, positioning him for a potentially long tenure. Gruber also suggests that Cook may transition into an executive chairman role, continuing to influence the company.
Ternus assumed responsibility for iPhone hardware engineering in 2020 and became Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering in January 2021. Gruber notes that Apple’s hardware performance, including its chips, has been “exemplary” under Ternus’s leadership.
