The UK government has announced new measures to fight obesity, including a sugar tax on milkshakes, packaged milk, and drinks.
Under the new rules, drinks containing more than 4.5 grams of sugar per 100ml will be subject to taxation, down from the previous threshold of 5 grams.
Health Secretary Vess Strating addressed Parliament, stating that obesity robs children of a healthy start in life and disproportionately affects the poorest communities.
He warned that overweight individuals face lifelong health challenges, costing the government billions of pounds in treatment.
The new sugar tax will come into effect on January 1, 2028. However, “open cup” drinks sold in cafes and markets will be exempt from the tax.
