HMD 100, 101, and 102 Are Ideal Basic Phones on a Budget

HMD has introduced another trio of basic phones, shortly after unveiling a similar set of 4G models. CEO Jean-Francois Baril announced the new lineup on LinkedIn, confirming the arrival of the HMD 100, HMD 101, and HMD 102.

While the designs are new, the feature sets have been scaled back compared with the HMD 102 4G and HMD 101 4G models released in September.

Features

The HMD 102 is the most capable device in the new batch. It includes an MP3 player and a camera with an LED flash. The HMD 101 removes the camera, while the HMD 100 appears to omit the MP3 player entirely, which likely means it does not offer a microSD slot, given the extremely limited internal storage.

HMD has not specified 4G support for these devices, which is notable as many regions are phasing out 2G and 3G networks. Another limitation is the use of microUSB ports, according to the phones’ user guides. This connector type is no longer permitted in territories such as the European Union, where USB-C is mandatory for portable electronics.

HMD plans to target markets where 2G networks remain operational, which includes remote areas of Pakistan as well. User guides published by HMD show separate entries for the HMD 101 and the HMD 101 4G. The company already sells the 4G versions of these models in regions that require them. These variants also include USB-C and dual-SIM support for two active phone lines.

Expected Pricing

HMD has not revealed official price tags as of yet, but since these are only feature phones, sometimes also called “dumb” phones, with the rise of smartphones lately, we can expect their prices to start below the $50-100 mark.
