Video Shows Google’s Take on Apple’s NameDrop Feature in Action

In November, reports surfaced that Google was preparing a feature similar to Apple’s NameDrop, the iPhone tool introduced in 2023 that allows users to share files or contact information simply by bringing two iPhones together.

New details now give the first look at how Google’s implementation will work, with early development focused specifically on contact sharing.

A demonstration video shows the basic animation for the upcoming Android feature, giving a preview of how two devices will initiate the exchange. Actual contact transfer, however, is not yet functional, highlighting that the feature remains in active development.

Google has not decided on a final name for the feature. Internally, it is referred to as Gesture Exchange or Contact Exchange. Either of these could be the final branding, though Google may introduce a new name closer to launch.

Launch Likely in 2026

Given its unfinished state, the feature is not expected to roll out until sometime in 2026. Once it becomes available, users will need to align their phones’ NFC antennas to trigger the initial handshake.

Unlike iPhones, which consistently place NFC hardware at the top of the device, Android phones vary widely in antenna placement, which may require some trial and error between devices.
