A 75-year-old American hunter, Thomas Garrick Steele, legally hunted a Kashmir markhor in the Tushi-Shasha Conservancy of Lower Chitral, after securing a permit from the wildlife department for US$243,000 (Rs. 68.327 million).
Farooq Nabi, Divisional Forest Officer of the Wildlife Division in Chitral, told Dawn that the department, with assistance from the local community, helped facilitate the hunt. Steele selected a markhor with 55-inch horns, which he shot from approximately 250 metres using his American rifle.
The hunt was conducted under the government’s exportable trophy quota. Last year, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also launched a non-exportable trophy hunting program, in which the horns remain with the wildlife department.
Around 80% of the revenue from hunting permits is directed to local communities, funding collective development projects through village conservation committees.
Each year, the wildlife department auctions permits for three Kashmir markhors across various conservancies in Chitral district.

It is deplorable to issue permits for hunting
of Markhors. Government should reconsider it’s decision of licensing for hunting, Pakistan,s pride(Markhors).
It’s their greed for money, no respect for wildlife, it’s conservation or nature preservation.
What difference would these 243k USD make in poor population life, I’m guessing.
Let’s learn to live that way.
Greed of money has destroyed the mindset of a Muslim,
What else can be expected of muslims when they don’t care about human and animal rights, privileges and their own very cultural norms…
It is a shame for the country and forest development and its pure greed that they would issue such a license to take the life of a living animal. I strongly condemn this act and demand that any future hunting of wildlife should be permanently banned in the whole of Pakistan.
Being a Muslim, it’s very unfair practice to kill such species. Secondly, it’s Pakistan national animal. Must not be allowed in any circumstantial it’s killing at least in Pakistan.
Barbaric! GOP should step in and stop this!
It’s obvious
Pakistan is a lawless country
You can buy any institute or law in Pakistan with money ۔ shameful
Hunting and killing voiceless creatures in the name of religion or fun is inevitable if the lowest characteristic of humans and so called religious people. So shameful and cruel
Does religion enforce to hunt these voiceless creatures?
Thanks for telling me that America is a religion lol
Why it is required to hunt these markhors?
Nothing wrong with that . An american killed 3 Pakistanis and pmln let him go without issues.
