Goods Transporters’ Strike Brings Development Projects to Standstill Across Punjab

Public and private sector development projects across Lahore and other parts of Punjab have come to a grinding halt as a wheel-jam strike by goods transporters continues to disrupt the supply of construction material.

Officials confirmed that the suspension of deliveries of cement, crushed stone, bricks, and other essential materials from key hubs, including Sargodha, has stalled construction work for more than a week.

The disruption has affected major cities such as Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Multan, Sahiwal, and Bahawalpur.

An official of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) said all ongoing projects requiring construction material have stopped, worsening dust pollution, smog, and environmental conditions due to incomplete works.

Similar delays have been reported in projects under the Lahore Development Plan (LDP), where concrete work cannot proceed without raw materials.

Private builders said construction activities, including brickwork, plastering, lintel casting, and tiling, have either stopped or slowed significantly, forcing even individual homeowners to suspend work.

Builders warned that the prolonged strike is triggering unemployment across the construction sector.

Meanwhile, transporters have refused to end the strike until their demands are met.

These include the suspension of controversial clauses in the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 2025, an end to FIRs against drivers, heavy fines, and the impounding of vehicles.

Punjab Stone Transporters Association leader Khalid Arain said the strike would continue unless the government provides firm assurances to resolve the issues promptly, stressing that thousands of workers remain jobless due to the standoff.
