The Shaheen Chowk underpass has reached its final stages as Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi inspected the project on Tuesday and instructed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to complete the remaining work without delay.
According to the Interior Ministry, the underpass is expected to be inaugurated next week. The foundation stone of the project was laid by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on October 24, and officials said nearly 90 percent of the work has now been completed.
During the visit, CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa briefed the interior minister on the project’s progress, stating that the structural work has been completed while road carpeting and finishing work are still under way. Mohsin Naqvi directed the authority to ensure early completion of the remaining tasks.
Speaking at the site, the interior minister said the underpass would help ease traffic congestion on surrounding roads and improve traffic flow in the area.
The project was approved at a cost of Rs. 1.3 billion. However, the CDA later revised the scope of work, increasing both the scale and cost by 15 percent. The design was modified by extending the length of the underpass barrel from 56 meters to 85 meters, along with other minor changes.
The underpass is located at the junction of 9th Avenue and Khyaban-i-Iqbal, an area that has long faced heavy traffic congestion. Officials said the project was originally scheduled for completion by April but was fast-tracked and is now nearing completion.
