Viral Chinese Youth Issues Public Apology After Harassing Women in Islamabad

A young Chinese national has issued a public apology after a video of him harassing women and behaving inappropriately in Islamabad went viral on social media, sparking widespread anger and debate.

The original clip, shared on X, appeared to be filmed in the F-10 Markaz area of the capital. It shows the man, believed to be a Chinese visitor, approaching women wearing burqas in a crowded marketplace.

He can be seen gesturing towards them and seemingly offering them cigarettes while repeatedly saying phrases like “hello” and “how are you” as the women walk past in silence, refusing to engage. Another individual, presumed to be his companion, records the interaction and can be heard laughing throughout.

The same video also captures the youth stopping at a food stall, picking up what looks like fries or similar snack items, and eating them as he walks away, without any visible attempt to pay the vendor.

The behavior, coupled with the mocking tone and the laughter of the person filming, drew strong criticism online, with users calling it disrespectful, harassing, and deeply insensitive to local cultural norms.

Amid mounting backlash, a second video surfaced in which the same young man appears in front of the camera to apologise. Speaking directly to viewers, he says he arrived in Pakistan only recently and claims he was unaware of local traditions and sensitivities.

He acknowledges that his actions were wrong, says he is sorry for his behavior, and stresses that his conduct should not be seen as representative of Chinese people or allowed to harm Pakistan–China relations.
