The Sindh government has decided to take priority measures to evacuate and demolish dangerous buildings in Karachi and provide housing for affected residents.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Provincial Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah on Thursday at the Karachi commissioner’s office.
The meeting resolved to accelerate the evacuation of unsafe structures, demolish buildings that have already been vacated, and rehabilitate displaced residents.
Officials informed the meeting that assistant commissioners have surveyed 471 out of 588 highly dangerous buildings across the city.
Participants agreed to prioritize the rehabilitation of residents displaced from 59 evacuated buildings, with the government deciding to construct flats for the affected families.
Syed Nasir Hussain Shah directed authorities to conduct similar surveys in Hyderabad, Sukkur, and other cities of the province to identify hazardous structures.
Separately, the Cantonment Board disconnected electricity supply to City View Apartments in Saddar and another dilapidated building after declaring them uninhabitable.
However, power was restored after MQM-Pakistan senior leader Dr Farooq Sattar intervened, contacted Additional CEO Yamna Afzal, and submitted a written guarantee on behalf of residents.
Addressing residents, Dr Farooq Sattar said the alleged injustice against nearly 200 flat owners, reportedly in collusion with a builder, must end. He also assured residents of support in repairing the building.
