Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday summoned concrete policy proposals for palm oil production along Pakistan’s coastal belt, which will help boost agricultural exports.
The prime minister said the government is investing in agricultural research within existing resources to raise per-acre yields. He also called for targeted measures to expand exports of fisheries, fruits and value-added agricultural products.
The PM was presented with a detailed assessment of challenges along with a proposed future strategy. The briefing included comparative analyses of major Rabi and Kharif crops, horticulture, livestock and the dairy sector.
The prime minister discussed steps to ensure the availability of high-quality seeds, timely fertilizer at affordable prices, and effective pesticides to control crop diseases.
The meeting was informed that a short-term reform framework has been prepared to increase average yields using existing resources. A separate reform plan for agricultural research institutions was presented, focusing on improving existing crop yields and promoting high-value crops suited to Pakistan’s climate and soil conditions.
The prime minister appreciated the detailed briefing and directed that a practical and effective roadmap be incorporated into the government’s formal agricultural reform proposals.
