Authorities have decided to temporarily shut down the Old Pipri Pumping Station for four days, approximately 96 hours, to complete interconnection and maintenance work, according to the Water Corporation.
The shutdown aims to improve and stabilise Karachi’s water supply system under the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP).
Officials said work on laying a new water pipeline at the Old Pipri Station will continue from January 10 (Saturday) to January 13 (Tuesday).
Due to maintenance and interconnection activities, water supply from the Old Pipri Pumping Station will remain suspended during this period.
However, water supply from the New Pipri Pumping Station will continue as normal.
Water supply will remain temporarily affected in parts of Malir Town, Shah Faisal Town, Model Zone Town, SPL, and PIA areas. Additionally, the Landhi and Sherpao hydrants will remain closed during the maintenance period.
The shutdown will cause a temporary shortfall of around 60 million gallons per day. Despite this, the city will continue to receive approximately 590 million gallons of water daily.
Officials said the new main pipeline aims to improve water transmission, safety, and system stability. Interconnection with the existing system and installation of valves are necessary to activate the new line.
Due to the deteriorated condition of the old pipeline, the water supply had significantly declined, making the installation of a new line unavoidable. Authorities expect a noticeable improvement in water supply once the new pipeline becomes operational.
