Several major motorways across Punjab have been temporarily closed after dense fog severely reduced visibility, prompting authorities to suspend traffic movement in the interest of public safety.
According to the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP), the closures were enforced as visibility dropped below safe driving levels, making travel extremely hazardous during early morning hours.
The affected sections include:
| M-2 | From Thokar Niaz Baig to Chakri |
| M-3 | From Faizpur to Samundri |
| M-4 | From Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad |
| M-11 | From Lahore to Sial Mor (near Sambrial) |
| M-14 | From Daud Khel to Isa Khel |
Motorway Police officials said the decision was taken to prevent accidents, as thick fog significantly reduces drivers’ ability to see ahead, sometimes limiting visibility to less than 50 meters.
Fog is a recurring winter issue in Punjab, particularly in January, when cold air traps moisture and pollutants near the ground, a phenomenon known as temperature inversion.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), such conditions contribute to hundreds of road accidents every year, with more than 200 fog-related crashes reported annually.
Authorities have advised motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, use fog lights where permitted, maintain safe distances, and follow official updates before setting out on long journeys.
The Motorway Police have assured that all routes will be reopened once visibility improves and conditions become safe for travel.
