Pakistan is in touch with US authorities regarding the suspension of immigrant visa processing, with hopes that the routine processing will resume soon, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said on Thursday.
The US State Department announced an indefinite pause on immigrant visa processing for applicants from 75 countries, including Pakistan, effective January 21, 2026.
The department cited concerns over migrants drawing on public welfare at “unacceptable rates” and said the freeze will continue until it can ensure that new immigrants will not burden the American public.
Speaking at a weekly briefing in Islamabad, Andrabi described the situation as “evolving” and said Pakistan was seeking further details from US authorities. “We understand this is an internal ongoing review of US immigration,” he added.
