OpenAI Rolls Out Cheaper ChatGPT Worldwide, But With a Catch

OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT Go globally, making its lower-cost subscription plan available in all markets where ChatGPT operates. The plan is priced at $8 per month in the US and sits between the free tier and the $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus subscription.

ChatGPT Go was first introduced in India in August 2025 and later expanded to more than 170 countries. The global launch now completes that rollout.

What ChatGPT Go Includes

ChatGPT Go provides access to GPT-5.2 Instant, OpenAI’s faster and more lightweight model. Compared with the free tier, the plan offers significantly higher usage limits, including more messages, file uploads, and image generation. While OpenAI has not disclosed exact limits, it said the Go plan provides roughly ten times the allowance of the free version.

The subscription also includes a longer context window and improved memory support, allowing the chatbot to better retain and reference information across conversations.

Ads Coming to Free and Go Plans

Alongside the global launch, OpenAI confirmed it will begin testing advertisements in the Free and ChatGPT Go tiers in the US. Ads will appear below ChatGPT responses and will be clearly labeled as “Sponsored.”

OpenAI said advertisers will not be able to influence chatbot responses and that user conversations will not be shared with advertisers. Ads will not appear alongside content related to sensitive or regulated topics, and users under the age of 18 will not see ads.

Why The Ads?

Sam Altman said the ad rollout is intended to help keep ChatGPT affordable as demand continues to grow. He acknowledged earlier criticism of introducing ads but said the approach is necessary to support users who want frequent access to AI tools without paying higher subscription fees.

Altman said OpenAI drew inspiration from Instagram’s ad format when designing how ads will appear in ChatGPT.

Paid Users Remain Ad-Free

ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Pro subscribers will continue to have an ad-free experience. OpenAI said it will closely monitor user feedback during the ad trial and make adjustments as needed.

The company also said ChatGPT Go saw strong adoption in earlier markets and expects usage to increase further following the global rollout.
