PAA Introduces Electric Vehicles for Airport Operations

Pakistan’s aviation sector appears to be taking a visible step toward cleaner airport operations as the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has started deploying environment-friendly electric vehicles (EVs) for use in airport services.

The shift gained attention after a branded BYD electric vehicle, featuring a distinctive yellow-and-black checkered livery, was spotted operating within an airport facility.

Recent reports have described the move as part of broader efforts to reduce emissions from ground operations and gradually modernize support fleets at airports.

The development also aligns with parallel steps to introduce EV infrastructure at Islamabad International Airport. An auction notice issued by the PAA offered lease rights for the establishment and operation of a petrol pump and an EV charging station, along with allied facilities at the airport.

The move signals that airport planners are preparing for both conventional refueling needs and an emerging EV charging ecosystem as electrification expands.

Globally, airports are increasingly adopting EVs for airside and landside duties such as staff transport and operational mobility, citing lower emissions and quieter operation.

International aviation bodies have noted that shifting airport vehicle fleets to electric can significantly reduce vehicle-related emissions, supporting sustainability goals being adopted worldwide.

Separately, BYD is also expected to deepen its footprint in Pakistan’s EV market. The company is reportedly preparing to roll out two additional electric vehicle models locally, with both launches anticipated before the end of January, further expanding choices for Pakistani buyers.
