WhatsApp is developing support for voice and video calls in group chats on its web client, according to WABetaInfo.
The feature is currently under development and is not yet available for beta testing. Once released, it will allow users to participate in group calls from WhatsApp Web, regardless of the device they are using.
The update is part of WhatsApp’s effort to align the web experience with its mobile and desktop applications. The goal is to allow users to place calls directly from the web client without installing a native or hybrid desktop app, which is particularly useful when using a shared or temporary computer.
Recent updates to the WhatsApp Web beta indicate that the company is actively developing voice and video calls for group chats. While basic calling support was partially announced last year, group calling was at an early stage at the time. WhatsApp is now improving this functionality to make it fully compatible with group chats.
The report said the feature will allow users to start calls directly from group chats on WhatsApp Web. This will ensure that all group members can join calls, regardless of whether they are using mobile, desktop, or web versions of WhatsApp.
As with calls on Android and iOS, group calls on the web client are expected to support up to 32 participants, although this has not yet been officially confirmed. It remains unclear whether WhatsApp will introduce the feature with a lower participant limit before expanding it to the full capacity.
WABetaInfo also reported that WhatsApp is developing the ability to create call links directly from group chats on the web client. Users will be able to generate shareable links for voice or video calls, similar to the functionality already available on mobile apps.
In addition, WhatsApp is working on call scheduling for both individual and group chats. Scheduled calls will include a name, description, and approximate start and end times. These scheduled entries will notify participants in advance, but will not start automatically. Users will need to specify whether the scheduled call is for voice or video.
Voice and video group calling, call links, and scheduled calls on WhatsApp Web remain under development and are planned for a future update. WhatsApp continues to refine web calling features and address bugs ahead of the official release.
