Senate Passes Strict New Law for Ride-Hailing Companies, Vehicles, and Drivers

The Senate on Wednesday approved a bill to regulate online ride-hailing services operating in Islamabad, introducing a formal legal framework for the sector.

Under the law, ride-hailing companies must obtain an operational certificate from the designated authority before offering services in the capital. All drivers will be required to register with the authority, and unregistered drivers will not be allowed to operate in the city.

The legislation also sets eligibility requirements for drivers and vehicles. Drivers must hold a valid driving license along with a special permit, while vehicles must be registered and pass annual fitness inspections.

Ride-hailing companies will be required to maintain records of drivers and vehicles and provide operational data to authorities when requested. Senate officials said the legislation aims to address safety, accountability, and administrative issues in a sector that has expanded without a clear regulatory structure.
