Authorities Restrict All Traffic Entry to Murree as Snow Chokes Routes

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon has stated that authorities have completely stopped entry into Murree for all tourists and traffic,  including local residents, due to severe snowfall and widespread road closures.

In a statement, DC Islamabad said heavy machinery is being used to clear blocked routes, but operations are facing challenges as traffic movement on the expressway has been affected due to a lack of cooperation from some commuters. He urged the public to avoid travel until roads are cleared.

The restrictions come as intense winter weather continues to disrupt travel in and around Murree. Earlier, authorities had already tightened access on the Islamabad–Murree Expressway (N-75) after heavy snowfall worsened road conditions.

The district administration, in coordination with the National Highways and Motorway Police, had closed the entry point at Phoolgaran Toll Plaza for regular traffic, urging people to postpone unnecessary trips because slippery roads and low visibility increase the risk of accidents.

With more snow forecast and the possibility of harsh conditions, Murree Police also issued a 10-point travel advisory asking tourists to avoid non-essential travel and prepare properly if they must travel. The advisory highlights steps such as keeping vehicles winter-ready, using snow chains, maintaining sufficient fuel, driving at reduced speed, and avoiding night travel due to poor visibility and icy roads.

It also warns against parking on main roads or steep slopes, and asks tourists to use designated parking areas only. In emergencies, the public was advised to contact Police Helpline 15 or Rescue 1122.

Provincial officials have also been monitoring preparations as Murree remains under the influence of a western weather system. Earlier reports said snowfall, accompanied by rain, could be heavy, with authorities expecting 12 to 20 inches of accumulation over the spell.

Punjab’s communications minister had visited Murree to review arrangements, directing departments to identify sensitive roads and critical points, monitor vehicles entering the hill station, and stay coordinated with weather updates. Officials also checked snow-clearing machinery, salt camps, and tourist facilitation centers as part of the response plan.

Authorities say the immediate priority is to restore safe passage by clearing routes as quickly as possible. Until then, commuters and tourists have once again been urged to stay off the roads and delay travel plans to avoid getting stranded.
