The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has invited mobile phone manufacturers operating in the country for consultations as preparations for the launch of 5G services move forward.
According to sources, the consultations are aimed at aligning the local handset ecosystem with upcoming 5G requirements and ensuring device readiness ahead of the spectrum auction.
Officials said Pakistan currently has 36 mobile phone manufacturing companies, including both local and international brands, producing handsets for the domestic market. The PTA has sought feedback from these manufacturers on the availability of 5G-compatible devices, production capacity, affordability, and timelines to support a smooth rollout of next-generation mobile services.
Sources said the government plans to hold the 5G spectrum auction by the end of February 2026. The auction is expected to be a key step toward improving high-speed connectivity, expanding digital services, and supporting emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and smart applications across multiple sectors.
According to the sources, early engagement with mobile phone manufacturers is intended to address potential challenges related to device availability and consumer adoption. Coordinated planning between regulators, telecom operators, and manufacturers is seen as critical to ensuring that 5G services, once launched, are accessible to a broader population.
