The Punjab government has launched large-scale development work in 51 cities under a flagship program initiated by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to improve urban infrastructure and civic facilities.
Chairing a meeting on Sunday, the chief minister directed authorities to complete the first phase by June, with a primary focus on sewerage systems and essential urban infrastructure.
She took direct oversight of the Punjab Development Plan to ensure transparency, efficiency, and timely execution.
To strengthen monitoring, the government is setting up provincial and district-level control rooms for real-time supervision of projects and swift resolution of public complaints.
Under the plan, authorities will construct 5,887 kilometers of sewerage lines and 181 drainage channels, and install more than 33,000 new manhole covers across the participating cities.
Production of HDPE sewerage pipes is also underway.
Deputy commissioners from several districts briefed the chief minister on progress. In Multan, the project includes 232km of sewerage lines, pumping stations, generators, and road expansion.
Gujranwala will receive its largest-ever development package, including sewerage lines, a wastewater treatment plant, and new machinery.
In Dera Ghazi Khan, sewerage and drainage projects worth over Rs12 billion are being executed, while Bhakkar, Vehari, and Sheikhupura are seeing major upgrades in sanitation, parks, and civic infrastructure.
CM Maryam Nawaz stressed that all projects must be completed on time and transparently to ensure development reaches every street and neighborhood across Punjab.
