Lawyer Flags Alleged Misuse of FBR Identity by IR Officers Association

A serious case of impersonation has surfaced involving an entity operating under the name Inland Revenue Service Officers Association, which has allegedly been misusing the official name, address and resources of the Federal Board of Revenue.

The matter was raised through a formal legal notice addressed to the FBR chairman by constitutional lawyer Muhammad Azhar Siddique, who alleged that the association falsely presented itself as an officially recognised body operating from FBR Headquarters in Islamabad.

According to the notice, the entity used “IRSOA Secretariat, FBR Headquarters, Islamabad” on its letterhead, creating what the lawyer described as a misleading impression of institutional backing and official approval.

Sources said the notice pointed out that defamation notices sent to the alleged office bearers at the FBR headquarters address were returned by Pakistan Post, with officials confirming that no such association exists at the location. This, the notice said, established that the body was operating under false pretences.

The legal notice further highlighted that the association listed a generic email address as its official contact, which was found to be non functional and unresponsive to inquiries.

More alarmingly, the telephone number mentioned on the association’s letterhead was found to belong to a senior Inland Revenue Service officer currently posted under the Member Legal wing of the FBR. The development has raised questions about possible misuse of official resources and internal complicity.

The notice demanded that the FBR immediately launch a comprehensive investigation into the existence, operations and membership of the purported association. It also called on the revenue authority to direct relevant agencies to register an FIR against individuals involved for impersonation, fraud and misuse of official resources.

In addition, the legal team sought complete records of any officially recognised association of IRS officers, recovery of the telephone number and other official facilities allegedly being misused, and a written response within seven days detailing actions taken and inquiry findings.

Azhar Siddique said swift and decisive action was necessary to protect the credibility of the FBR and uphold the integrity of the Revenue Division.
