Adobe has announced it will discontinue its 2D animation software, Adobe Animate, as the company increases its focus on artificial intelligence-based products.
The company updated its support site and sent emails to customers on Monday, confirming that Adobe Animate will be discontinued on March 1, 2026.
Support Timeline for Customers
Adobe said enterprise customers will continue to receive technical support through March 1, 2029, to help with the transition. Other customers will receive support through March of next year, the company said. The software will continue to function for users who already have it downloaded.
User Concerns
The decision has prompted criticism from users who expressed concern about the lack of direct alternatives that match Animate’s functionality.
One user posting on X urged Adobe to open-source the software rather than discontinue it. Other commenters said the move could significantly affect their work and questioned Adobe’s broader product strategy.

Adobe’s Explanation
In a frequently asked questions document, Adobe said Animate has existed for more than 25 years and has played a role in developing the animation ecosystem.
The company said it plans to discontinue support as technologies and platforms evolve and as new tools emerge that better meet user needs.
Replacement Tools and Limitations
Adobe said it cannot recommend a single product that fully replaces Animate.
Customers with a Creative Cloud Pro plan can use other Adobe applications to cover parts of Animate’s functionality. The company said Adobe After Effects can handle complex keyframe animation using its Puppet tool.
It also said Adobe Express can apply animation effects to photos, videos, text, shapes, and other design elements.
Hints Were Always There
Before the announcement, Adobe typically charged $34.49 per month for Animate. The price dropped to $22.99 per month with a 12-month commitment. The annual prepaid plan cost $263.88.
There were earlier signs of the change. Animate did not receive a 2025 version, and the product was not featured at Adobe’s annual Adobe Max conference.
