The Sindh government has announced mandatory screening for HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and hepatitis B and C for all deportees arriving at entry points in the province. The decision aims to prevent undetected infections among returning Pakistanis from spreading chronic diseases into the general population.
Health officials say around 150 to 200 deportees arrive daily at Jinnah International Airport, many without prior testing. Over recent years, about 50,000 deportees have entered the country through various points, raising concerns about silent transmission of infectious diseases.
Under the new protocol, deportees will receive on-the-spot testing, and those who test positive will be linked to treatment and counselling programs.
The provincial health department has equipped staff with rapid test kits, X-ray facilities, and personal protective equipment, and has provided specialized training to ensure screening is conducted respectfully.
Dr. Zafar Mehdi, focal person for communicable diseases at Karachi airport, emphasized that strict confidentiality will be maintained to protect individuals from stigma. Authorities have coordinated with the Federal Investigation Agency and other agencies to ensure compliance, and voluntary testing will be encouraged for other travelers.
