Amazon is reportedly considering launching a marketplace that would allow publishers to license their content directly to AI companies.
According to The Information, Amazon has been meeting with publishing executives and discussing plans for such a platform. Ahead of an AWS conference for publishers held on Tuesday, the company circulated slides referencing a potential content marketplace.
When contacted by TechCrunch, an Amazon spokesperson did not deny the report but did not confirm specific plans. The spokesperson said Amazon maintains long-standing relationships with publishers across AWS, Retail, Advertising, AGI, and Alexa, and that the company is continually innovating, but had nothing specific to share.
Industry Push for Licensed AI Training Data
The reported move comes as AI companies seek legally secure sources of training data amid ongoing lawsuits and copyright disputes.
Amazon would not be the first major technology firm to introduce a content licensing marketplace. Microsoft recently launched a Publisher Content Marketplace, which it says provides publishers with a new revenue stream while giving AI systems scaled access to premium content. Microsoft described the initiative as a transparent economic framework for licensing.
AI companies have already pursued licensing agreements directly with media organizations. OpenAI, for example, has signed partnerships with the Associated Press, Vox Media, News Corp, and The Atlantic, among others.
Legal Concerns
Despite these agreements, legal challenges over the use of copyrighted material in AI training continue. Numerous lawsuits have been filed, and courts are still addressing how copyright law applies to AI systems. New regulatory proposals are also being introduced.
Publishers have also expressed concern that AI-generated summaries, particularly those displayed by Google in search results, may reduce traffic to their websites. A recent study cited in the report described the impact on user click-through rates as severe.
The Information reported that some publishers may view a marketplace-based licensing system as a more sustainable model than individual partnerships, potentially allowing revenue to scale as AI usage expands.
