Senate Committee Confuses ‘CAMELL’ Project With Actual Camels

An unusual situation arose during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Food Security when members mistakenly discussed a development project as if it were related to camels.

The committee was reviewing the Community Action Plan for Management of Sustainable Ecosystem, Livelihoods and Livelihood (CAMELL) initiative for Tharparkar. However, for nearly 15 minutes, participants assumed that “CAMELL” referred to camel conservation rather than the actual community development programme.

Committee Chairman Masroor Ahsan began the discussion by asking what measures were being taken to protect and improve camels in Tharparkar, expressing concern that the ministry was not taking the matter seriously and had arrived with incomplete details.

During the exchange, Senator Danesh Kumar remarked that officials were being questioned about camels despite confusion over the spelling of the term. Minister of State Malik Rashid responded by saying efforts were underway to improve camel breeding and that further details would be shared in the next meeting.

Senator Aimal Wali Khan also noted that, following the 18th Amendment, it was important to determine whether the relevant authority even fell under federal jurisdiction.

The misunderstanding was eventually clarified by a member of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), who explained that CAMELL was not about camels at all but was an acronym for a community action programme focused on sustainable ecosystems and livelihoods in Tharparkar.

Once the clarification was made, the mix-up drew laughter from committee members, bringing the discussion back on track.
